Capsule Geology

The area lies within a stock (Thorn stock) of feldspar porphyry related to the Late Cretaceous Windy Table Complex.

The Balvenie zone outcrops as a set of silicified spires with associated intense alteration and pyrite-tetrahedrite-enargite mineralization. Alteration minerals include natroalunite, dickite, pyrophyllite and diaspore.

In 2005, grab samples (3788834) yielded values of up to 1.19 grams per tonne gold, 23.5 grams per tonne silver and 0.227 per cent copper, while a float sample (379103) assayed 1.99 grams per tonne gold and 307 grams per tonne silver (Baker, D. (2010-10-28): 2010 Technical Report on the Thorn Property).

The zone was detected by an IP survey 500 metres to the west-northwest where it was tested by diamond-drill hole THN05-40. The hole intersected disseminations and veinlets of pyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, and minor chalcopyrite and pyrargyrite. The best mineralized section assayed 0.23 grams per tonne gold, 170.0 grams per tonne silver, and 8.64 per cent copper over 1.0 metre (Press Release, Cangold Limited, August 24, 2005).

Another zone of mineralization, referred to as the Tooheys Creek zone, is located to the southwest of the Balvenie zone. The zone comprises a 1 metre wide calcite-quartz vein with 3 to 5 per cent pyrite. The vein strikes 090 degrees and dips vertically. Float samples from the area contain quartz-carbonate veining and stockworks with disseminated arsenopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite.

In 2005, a grab sample (378730) from the vein assayed 2.37 grams per tonne gold and 10.7 grams per tonne silver, while a float sample (276451), collected in 2004, assayed 12.80 grams per tonne gold, 2.14 per cent copper, 1.90 per cent lead and 6.57 per cent zinc (Baker, D. (2010-10-28): 2010 Technical Report on the Thorn Property).

Work History

In 2004, Cangold Limited and Rimfire Minerals discovered the new Balvenie zone and drilled one hole in 2005. See Thorn (104K 031) for further details of the larger Thorn property.
